  • Consumers urged to seek energy saving advice as cold snap begins

The UK will be rudely awakened from its mild weather as winter is set to bite back this week according to the Met Office.  Many homes will be unprepared and will continue to leak energy which will result in unnecessarily high fuel bills.

The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) is urging people to take out simple measures in the home which will help them to waste less energy and make savings at a time when finances are stretched after the Christmas period.

Green Deal cash- back scheme good idea but wrong timing says heating industry

The government's announcement on the Green Deal cash-back scheme is a positive step in the right direction but the timing could be better says the heating industry.

With boiler sales struggling in this difficult economic climate, the scheme will be too late when it is launched in January 2013 to make an impact for UK manufacturers.

  • Government report supports new gas boilers in fight against fuel poverty

It is a well-known fact within the heating industry and other industry bodies that boilers account for about 60 percent of what a consumer would spend on energy bills. The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) believe that these new government statistics stating fuel poverty has fallen in the period to April 2011 reveal the major impact that energy efficiency and in particular the installation of a condensing boiler has on financially, hard pressed consumers.

  • Sustainable energy islands

When it comes to issues of energy, the UK is a country of contrasts. It is the windiest country in the EU, yet until recently it had very little renewable energy and most of it was from waste biomass. It is a country with some of Western Europe’s highest rates of home ownership and also the highest rates of fuel poverty. We invented trams and district heating systems, yet we abandoned these for less energy efficient and more individualised energy technologies. When it comes to seeking lessons and inspiration for the transition to a low carbon society, we can find many good practice examples in other northern European countries. But we can also find good examples closer to home.

According to leading industry body, the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) this would be an unwise move because it is sending out a wrong signal to consumers that ‘green measures’ are a waste of time.

  • HHIC ISSUES ADVICE ON HOW TO ACCESS HELP TOWARDS THE COST OF FUEL BILLS THIS WINTER

Energy prices are a major cause of public concern. According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, there are 5.5 million homes in the UK in fuel poverty (that is one in five of all households) and millions more have been hit by higher fuel bills recently. The energy industry has a duty to transform the market and support people to heat their homes and become more energy efficient.

  • MET OFFICE SAY SIBERIAN WEATHER SPELL SO DON’T LET YOUR BOILER GET FROSTBITE THIS WINTER

FROZEN CONDENSATE PIPES were a huge problem last year and many households were caught out during the severe cold weather spell – which in some areas went down to minus 20°C.
This has resulted in a large increase in the number of calls to boiler manufacturers and heating installers from householders with condensing (high efficiency) boilers where the condensate drainage pipe has frozen and become blocked with ice. This then causes the condensate to ‘back up’ into the boiler and can cause a complete shutdown.

  • Boosting feed in tariff for home heat and power technology will safeguard jobs, says industry

The Government should raise the feed in tariff for micro-CHP to accelerate the take up of the home boiler replacement technology: this will safeguard jobs and provide cost-effective low-carbon heating and hot water for consumers, say industry representatives.

Three trade associations representing the micro-CHP industry have combined to issue a statement. Their spokesman said

"Manufacturers and energy suppliers have invested hundreds of millions of pounds to bring micro-CHP to world markets. Much of the development work, and a large part of the manufacturing, are being done in the UK. It is essential that the product is a success in the UK for this work to stay here."

  • Green growth threatened by government red tape

The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) is urging the Government not to bring in a costly and additional installer accreditation scheme for the Green Deal in 2012. The trade body believes that unnecessary extra burdens placed on installers at this time threaten the loss of benefits from the scheme, could be costly and could put at risk existing safety measures for gas installation.

So it makes perfect sense to find ways that we can save energy in the home. Swap your old inefficient boiler for an A- rated energy efficient model.

2010 saw the launch of the successful boiler scrappage scheme where 61% would not have replaced their old boiler if it had not been for the scheme.

SBGI the energy industry body is supporting its division the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) by calling on the Government to reinstate a Boiler Scrappage Scheme in England to help people knock down the cost of their annual bills.

  • Vulnerable customers at risk because of lack of awareness regarding the priority service register says heating industry

The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council who represents the voice of the heating and hot water industry has grave concerns that many people who are not able to afford regular servicing on their heating systems are putting themselves at risk.

One of the main problems is that many people are not aware of the Priority Services Register (PSR).  Energy suppliers are obliged to offer a range of free services, known as the priority services register, to their most vulnerable customers. These services are free to join and are available from all mains gas and electricity suppliers.

I don’t really want a boiler be it gas, oil, solid fuel, condensing or combi. As for micro-generation – who on earth actually wants to run a power station in their home be it solar thermal, PV, micro-wind, micro-hydro or biomass? The mechanical ventilation sector has more acronyms than an advert for a top of the range BMW. And don’t even start on heating and hot water controls – the bridge of the Starship Enterprise looks simpler and I don’t have a spotty, male adolescent at home anymore to programme the thing.
