Heating Advice

I have a modern high efficiency condensing boiler which developed a fault during the recent very cold weather caused by the condensate drain freezing. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this happening again?

The situation you describe is not a boiler fault but is likely to be related to the routing or installation of the condensate drain. From what you say it is assumed that the drain pipe is mainly outside the house. Wherever possible it is preferable to connect the drain pipe to the waste system inside the house. But, where this is not feasible, the following points should be considered;

  • The pipe should have a continuous fall (minimum 2.5 degrees) with no low points where condensate can collect.
  • Any external pipework should be kept to the minimum possible and insulated if over 3 metres long.
  • The normal size of the condensate drain is 22 mm. But, if necessary, external pipework should be increased to 32 mm.

These recommendations are included in British Standards.
