What Do I Do If

I smell gas.

If you smell gas or think there might be a gas leak: turn off the gas at the meter, extinguish naked flames, open windows and leave the area. Seek medical advice if you feel unwell. Call the Gas Emergency Freephone Number 0800 111 999.

My Boiler stops working

Check the system for any obvious faults like staining around the boiler or a leak. Check the pressure of the boiler. Check to see if the pilot light if lit.

Then call the boiler manufacturer. They will advise you on the correct procedure to get it fixed. If you have a service contract you may want to call them to arrange a visit.

The pilot light has gone off

If you know how to re-light it follow the instructions and re-ignite the pilot light. If it won’t re-light, or if it goes out again do not persist and call the boiler manufacturer. If you have any doubts call the boiler manufacturer.

The Carbon Monoxide alarm sounds

If you suspect that an appliance is giving off carbon monoxide, turn it off, do not use it and seek help. Open doors and windows to ventilate the room. Call 0800 111 999

There are loud banging noises coming from my boiler

Your Boiler probably needs a good clean. A suitably trained heating engineer will be able to flush your system and treat it.

There’s a stain around the boiler Flue

Call a heating engineer to check there is no leaking or debris blocking the Flue. Don’t have a look yourself.

You may have noticed that many of the answers involved calling the Boiler manufacturer or an emergency number. This is because heating systems are complicated and only trained individuals should investigate and/or fix them. The Boiler manufacturers know their product and so will be able to offer the best advice on how to remedy the problem.

Do not try and fix the boiler yourself, do not be tempted to twiddle a few of the valves and don’t ask a mate of a mate. Always get professional advice.
